Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to drive the Alsace Wine Route?

The route runs about 170 km from Marlenheim to Thann. One day is enough for one area (around Colmar, or Obernai and Barr); allow a weekend to see the highlights.

Do I need to book a tasting?

Many cellar doors welcome visitors without booking during opening hours. For a group, a cellar tour or a tasting in another language, book ahead: each listing tells you.

When is the best time to visit?

May to October for the vineyards, with the harvest in September and October. In December, the Christmas markets of Colmar, Kaysersberg or Riquewihr combine well with cellar visits.

What is an Alsace Grand Cru?

One of the 51 delimited vineyard sites of the Alsace Grand Cru appellation. The Grand Cru name appears on the label, usually with one of the noble grapes: Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris or Muscat.

Can I visit the vineyards without a car?

Yes. Regional trains stop in several wine villages (Obernai, Barr, Dambach-la-Ville…) and you can rent bikes locally.
